Sage Advice Sibelius™ Sage: Sage advice for memory and cognitive improvement

Salvia officinalis History

Herbal and nutritional medicines are being investigated to improve overall cognitive function in all age groups. Salvia originates from a Latin word meaning "to heal". The use of Sage spans several thousand years and it is a long-standing traditional remedy for improving memory and cognitive function.

Numerous Health Benefits of Sage

Herbal and nutritional medicines are being investigated to slow, or even reverse, this process and to improve overall cognitive function in all age groups. Sage has numerous health benefits, such as improving attention, memory, recall, cognition, and learning, improving mood, reducing anxiety, inflammation, and having antioxidant effects. Sage was often quoted as a remedy for memory disorders in 16th and 17th century English herbals. Sage has been found to inhibit acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase is an enzyme that metabolises and breaks down acetylcholine. Acetylcholine plays an essential role in the formation of memories and cognition.

Its Role in Mood and Anxiety

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study investigated the effect of Sage on mood and anxiety. The results of the study found improvement in the ratings of mood in the absence of the stressor, along with reduced anxiety and increased "alertness", "calmness" and "contentedness". Research has shown improvements in mood in healthy young participants and improvements in attention task performance in older people. A study combining Sage with Rosemary and Lemon Balm found significant improvements in delayed word recall.

Memory and Cognitive Effects

Dr Brad McEwen PhD (Naturopath and Nutritionist) has been utilising Sage for its memory and cognitive effects for over 15 years. Dr Brad said "I find Sage very useful for numerous health conditions, particularly memory, concentration, and focus."
